Etsy Title Character Limit: 140 characters — and how to use every one

Free guide from ListingLift · Updated July 2026

The quick answer: Etsy titles can be up to 140 characters long. But the number that actually shapes good titles is smaller — because buyers rarely see all 140.

Why the first 40–50 characters matter most

In Etsy search results — especially on mobile, where most browsing happens — titles are cut off after roughly 40–50 characters. Whatever appears before the cut is your headline; everything after it works only for the search engine. That's why the golden rule is to front-load: your main keyword phrase goes first, supporting phrases follow.

Visible in search: "Soy Wax Candle | Lavender Vanilla | Amb…" — the buyer already knows exactly what this is.

Pipes, commas or dashes?

Etsy doesn't care — pipes ( | ), commas and dashes all work as separators. Pipes are the most scannable for humans, which is why you see them everywhere. What matters is that each separated chunk is a genuine search phrase, not a single filler word.

Should you always max out the 140?

Use as much as you can fill with distinct, honest phrases. Stretching to 140 by repeating the same word or padding with vague words ("beautiful", "lovely", "amazing" — nobody searches these) adds nothing. A tight 95-character title with five real search phrases beats a stuffed 140 every time.

Titles and tags work as a team

Your 140 title characters plus 13×20 tag characters give you 400 characters of searchable keyword space per listing. Plan them together: main phrases in the title (front-loaded), and every angle the title couldn't fit — style, occasion, audience, material — into the tags. Our tag guide shows a full worked example.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Etsy title character limit?

140 characters. Titles longer than that can't be saved. Search results display roughly the first 40–50 characters, so lead with your main keyword.

Do symbols like | count toward the 140 characters?

Yes — every character counts, including pipes, commas and spaces. ListingLift's counter shows your exact usage as you generate.

Can Etsy titles be too long?

Not for the algorithm — but titles padded with repeats and filler words look spammy to buyers and can reduce clicks. Fill the space with distinct, real search phrases only.
