How to Write Etsy Descriptions That Sell

Free guide from ListingLift · Updated July 2026

Buyers skim. Etsy's search reads. Google quotes. Your description has to serve all three at once — and the good news is that one simple structure does it.

The first sentence does the heavy lifting

Etsy indexes your description for search and weights early text most; Google often shows your opening line as the snippet under your listing. So the first sentence should contain your main keyword phrase and a reason to care:

"Soy wax candle in a reusable amber glass jar — hand-poured with lavender and vanilla for slow, 40-hour burns."

Compare that with the most common opening on Etsy — "Welcome to my shop!" — which spends your most valuable sentence saying nothing a buyer searched for.

The structure that works

  1. Hook (1–2 sentences): main keyword + the single most appealing thing about the product.
  2. Why you'll love it (3–4 short bullets): benefits in the buyer's terms — how it feels, what it solves, why it makes a great gift.
  3. Details: sizes, dimensions, materials, variations, personalisation options. Be precise — details prevent returns and messages.
  4. Care & shipping: processing time, dispatch, care instructions. Buyers checking this are close to purchasing.
  5. Call to action: one warm closing line inviting the purchase or a message.

Frequently asked questions

Does Etsy use descriptions for SEO?

Yes — Etsy indexes description text for search, with the beginning weighted most. Your main keyword belongs in the first sentence.

How long should an Etsy description be?

Long enough to cover benefits, details and shipping — usually 120–300 words. Beyond that, added length helps only if it adds real information.

Should I put links in my Etsy description?

Etsy doesn't hyperlink URLs in descriptions, and pasting them looks messy. Mention your shop sections by name instead.

Can AI write my Etsy descriptions?

Yes — ListingLift generates a structured, keyword-led description automatically, and on Pro it writes from your actual product photos. You review and personalise before pasting in.
